Lisa Appavou

Lisa oversees water quality data collection, coordinates fieldwork logistics, and conducts data analysis for several Aquaya projects. Under the REAL-Water project funded by USAID, she works on strengthening water quality monitoring and water treatment protocols in rural areas of East Africa by expanding Assurance Funds, a financial tool allowing existing water quality laboratories to analyze water samples from small water systems. Under the URBAN WASH program funded by USAID, she implements research to progress sustainable, equitable, and climate-resilient water, sanitation, hygiene, and water resources management in urban and peri-urban areas.

Previously, Lisa served as an intern at Aquaya, working on a new chlorination technology to improve drinking water safety in rural Uganda. She later completed her master’s thesis on the same topic, evaluating the performance of several low-tech passive chlorinators in rural Kenya with the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag).

Lisa holds an MSc and BSc in environmental sciences and engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne. She is a native Italian speaker and also speaks English, French, and German.
