How much will safe sanitation for all cost?
Understanding the financial requirements for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6.2 at the city level is critical to guide investment decisions. In this study, we estimated the costs of achieving universal access to sanitation in five cities across Kenya, Ghana, and Bangladesh. We examined how costs vary between different sanitation approaches such as sewerage, onsite sanitation, mini-sewers connected to communal septic tanks, and container-based sanitation. By comparing household-facing costs with household willingness-to-pay, we also quantified the amount of subsidies required for low-income households to access sanitation facilities and services. The study provides a framework for replicating these estimates in other settings.
