Mapping Underserved Communities to Improve Water Access and Equity

In Ghana, the urban population has more than tripled over the last three decades.  This leaves the expansion of water infrastructure lagging behind. In Accra, rapid population growth has outstripped water infrastructure development, leaving less than half of Accra’s households with piped water at home. Low-income families struggle with connection fees, exacerbating the situation. In response, Ghana Water Limited has implemented water connection subsidies, benefiting over 16,000 households since 2017.

However, despite these efforts, pinpointing and assisting the most vulnerable populations remains challenging due to the absence of comprehensive maps detailing underserved communities. To bridge this gap, the URBAN WASH program employs community engagement and GPS technology for mapping. Beyond identifying service gaps, this initiative empowers communities and aids Ghana Water Company in planning targeted investments and subsidies. URBAN WASH has successfully mapped 38 low-access communities in Accra, benefiting approximately 298,000 people—a significant stride toward achieving water equity.
